About Ousmane Bakayoko

Ousmane Bakayoko (or just Ousmane) is a song written by artist Mayaula Mayoni in the 1980s. The song was interpreted by Abeti Masikini in her last album “La Reine du Soukouss” in 1990. The most popular version of the song was released by Mayula himself though, in his album “L’Amour Au Kilo”. With a majestic interpretation by both Carlyto Lassa and Abby Surya, the song became a one of most appreciated songs in Congolese music. On major parties, rumba lovers often dance in couples on the song’s perfect tempo, with lyrics on their mouths, even more then ten years after its release.

Meaning

Based on its lyrics, Ousmane Bakayoko talks about a woman in love with Ousmane Bakayo, and already dating him. Ousmane’s point of view is not discussed in the song, only the female message. On that point, Both Carlyto, the male singer, and Abby interpret the woman portion of the lyrics. On the first part of the lyrics, the woman agrees on a date with Ousmane but warns him. She is afraid of meeting one of his mistresses and be prone to assault and who knows what. One can conclude that Ousmane is a sort of womanizer and she’s afraid to be deceived once more. On the second part of the song, she emphasizes on being too fragile to fight on such encounter, while clearly not renouncing to Ousmane, who already got her heart.
