About  Verckys

Verckys is a musician and businessman from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). This talented saxophonist was born Georges Kiamuangana Mateta, in Kisantu, DRC. Unlike most famous Congolese musicians of his time, Verckys came from a wealthy family. He managed to become the first Congolese to hold his own label, as well as a recording studio, among other achievements.  Many  Congolese musicians, including famous Pepe Kalle emerged through Verckys’ work.

Apparently, Verckys was also an-Africanist or just a thinker of his time. His song “Nakomitunaka” translating into “questioning myself” really questioned the religious aspect of colonization, and why all saints where whites while traditional heritages where reprimanded. It sounds like the church did not like it and excommunicated Verckys, but I have to double-check that part.

Relationship issues

Unfortunately, Verckys has not been on friendly terms all the times.  Papa Wemba’s widow kicked Verckys out of the latter’s funerals, for instance. That shocking act came from a long dating dispute. More shockingly a recent dispute with the talented guitarist Maika Munan saw Maika incarcerated in Kinshasa’s Makala prison. And if you have an idea of how Congolese prisons look like (for the time being), you know getting somebody arrested is a terrifying thing. Anyway, the site celebrates Congolese music achievements, so I mostly focus on his positive achievements.

Overall, Verckys was a pivotal character of Congolese music.

Enjoy Nakomitunaka. I will work on the lyrics as soon as I can.
